Apron

An apron is the defined area on an aerodrome where aircraft are parked, loaded or unloaded, refuelled, and maintained. It is part of the movement area but is not the manoeuvring area — aircraft and vehicles generally operate on the apron without requiring ATC clearance, though procedures vary by airport.

Apron vs. Manoeuvring Area

The manoeuvring area consists of runways and taxiways used for aircraft movement. The apron (or ramp) is the parking and servicing area. At large airports, apron management may be handled by a dedicated Apron Management Service (AMS) separate from tower.

Apron Safety

The apron is a high-risk environment: jet blast, propeller arcs, wingtip sweep, and heavy ground vehicle traffic create numerous hazards. Taxi slowly, be alert to ground crew signals, and ensure the aircraft is properly chocked and tied down when parked.
