Movement Area
The movement area is the total area of an aerodrome used for the surface movement of aircraft — comprising the manoeuvring area (runways and taxiways) and the apron. Vehicle and aircraft drivers on the movement area must comply with specific rules and may require ATC authorization depending on their location.
Movement Area Zones
- Manoeuvring area: Runways and taxiways — all vehicle movements require ATC clearance at controlled airports
- Apron: Parking and servicing area — usually managed by separate apron management or ground handling without ATC clearance (varies by airport)
Airside Driving
All drivers operating on the movement area of a controlled airport must hold an airside vehicle operator permit and radio equipment. Runway incursion prevention is the highest safety priority — all drivers must monitor tower frequency and receive explicit clearance before crossing any runway.
